Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Thu, September 9, 2004 - 9:30 AM"Ringu" is definitely a classic. I made the mistake of watching "The Ring" first. I thought it was lousy, but when I saw "Ringu" I enjoyed it a lot. "Audition" is decent too. -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Thu, September 9, 2004 - 10:23 AM"The Ring" was not a bad movie. it added a lot to the film series and the mythologie, there is some nice references to the original movie, like that pregnant file wrote in japanese found by Noah at the hospital (that might imply that Samara was adopted there, see the stpriline in "Ringu" about how Sadako´s mother had also powers). I like how in "The Ring" all the people who watched the tape experinece in real life some of the same images that were in the tape in the same order that they appeared in it, like if it was a countdown.
It was a good movie overall, subtle, and smart. -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Thu, September 9, 2004 - 10:35 AMI couldn't stand the little tyke. He was way to young to be that pensive. I think "The Ring" incorporated too much from the "Ringu" series into one movie, as well. You don't learn as much about the ring in the original, I liked that. I'm interested in how Hideo Nakata, the director of "Ringu" and writer of "Ringu 2", handles "The Ring 2".
Anyone had a chance to see "Ringu: Saishuu-shô" tv series or "The Ring Virus", the Korean version of "Ringu"? -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Thu, September 9, 2004 - 11:07 AMSeems that he is having problems shooting the film, it was supposed to be released Novemeber 10th and now it has been pushed back to March 2005 which it sucks. The script which gathered very good reviews on the net has been rewritten a couple of times while shooting, here it´s a newsbit i found on www.darkhorizons.com about the film:
"Interesting rumours are swirling behind the production of the sequel to "The Ring". The film has finally wrapped principal photography - around a week behind schedule and with Naomi Watts giving the producers an "I've got to be out of here by this time" style deadline. Shooting continued after Watts' deadline (and she did leave on that date).
That's not the end of it. Seems they are still shooting right now - pick-ups and FX work should continue for several more days. Reports from the set hold that reasons for the film going over schedule include director Hideo Nakata (who did the Japanese original) being asked to constantly change the script on the set, as well as his own language difficulties and alleged "problems with his own lack of decisiveness"."
Note very promising. -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Tue, April 5, 2005 - 2:09 AMTrue Ringu is classic.I just saw a great movie from the Japanese called Jigoku. About the negative effects of karma on a sinning individual who ends up in hell. The film is directed by NOBUO NAKAGAWA.His vision of hell is strangely beautiful.I recommend this film to those who like movies about the underworld -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Tue, April 5, 2005 - 9:03 AMJigoku is a classic. Perfectly captures that 60's cinema feeling. There are some gorgeous shots in this movie. It basically breaks into two parts, the first half is consists of the real plot and storyline, while the second half is probably the best movie depiction of Dante's Inferno that I've ever seen. -

Thu, April 7, 2005 - 11:22 PMI just saw Jigoku last night. It's been awhile since I last saw it.
I saw it as a double feature with Onibaba in Berkeley. Both are classics in my opinion.
I like Ringu 2 and BunMan: the untold story.
I didn't eat pork buns for a year after seeing that film! -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Fri, April 8, 2005 - 3:47 AMKorean cinema is lately beating Japan in bringing strangely compelling as well as creepy stories of horror. " A tale of Two Sisters" and "Oldboy" are the best 2 examples, not only they cleverly melt drama and horror in everyday´s life but they do it so well structurally that is a challenge to the viewer, the flashbacks, the mixture of fantasy and reality, mind and real, just excellent. Korea will become soon the new country to set new standards in horror as Japan lately is repeating itself at least in my opinion. -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Fri, April 8, 2005 - 11:03 AMBunman?!?! The name's frickin funny, like Big Head Monster. I'm gonna check it out. Story sounds kinda like the recent short, Dumplings from the Three...Extremes compilation, you should check it out. I have developed a new phobia of pot stickers lately.
A Tale of Two Sisters was excellent, it should have gotten a lot more recognition. Oldboy I have mixed feelings, but agree that Chan Wook Park is a talented director (check out Cut from the Three...Extremes series too) and shows promise. I've been generally impressed by the level of attention to cinematography in Korean horror lately.
I would say that Korea has come a long way from just rehashing Japanese horror. That seems to be Hollywood's job now, motivated out of profit and a paranoia of releasing a film that feels too "asian," instead of Korea, who did it out of necessity because of distribution restrictions. Despite the fact that Japan can't seem to let go of Ringu-technology-chainletter type themes, I would say that it's premature to say that the Japanese are beat for too long, I think it's more of a temporary lull.
I'm gonna put my money on Takashi Miike. The guy's a powerhouse, consistently churning out decent quality and original ideas (considering the sheer volume of his quickly growing body of work). With Oxide Pang from Hong Kong as a runner-up. I liked Abnormal Beauty, or the first three quarters of it, at least. Looking foward to see how the forthcoming Scarecrow is.
Honorable mention:
Hideo Nakata is a wild card, he has a couple of films in the works right now. Dark Water was good, but felt a little tired, like he had played himself out on Ringu. We can always hope that his next releases will change this trend.
Takashi Shimizu of Ju-On is working on a film, The Death, to be released next year, he's kinda new to the scene, I'm not sure if he's a flash in the pan or not yet. Still kinda riding on the coattails of Ju-On, with number 3 in the works which makes me a little worried.

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Fri, April 8, 2005 - 11:04 AMI really loved the 'Tomie' series. Weird and creepy and disturbing. Not as spooky as The Eye, but great nonetheless. I'll have to check out A Tale of Two Sisters for sure. -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Fri, April 8, 2005 - 12:40 PMI'm a big fan of any Junji Ito stories. Uzumaki was my favorite, what an amazing movie too, it could have been waaay longer, or in several parts. Ah, shame. -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 12:11 PMi think 'the isle' takes it for me. not quite horror, but so haunting. 'audition' is the most disturbed i've ever been watching a movie ('deeper deeper deeper'), and i liked the style of 'tale of two sisters' but didn't quite understand it so...
wong kar-wai should rock a horror flick, that would be awesome! -

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 7:35 AM" have R Point, Infection, A Living Hell, One Missed Call ..and Cello...haven't watched these yet though"
I liked R-Point pretty well, and liked Infection for it's kind of cheezy, B-grade flavor (ditto that for One Missed Call). I actually didn't like Cello particularly, it didn't grab me. I think a good horror movie should provoke some sort of visceral reaction, and that just didn't for some reason.
I agree with many of the other movies that people have mentioned- Ringu, Audition, Marebito, Old Boy.
What are people's opinions on "The Cure" and "H"?

Fri, January 11, 2008 - 1:30 AMNew to Tribe... and this is my first post, actually. I would have to say that "Tale of Two Sisters" made me scream out loud. I do not do that often when watching a movie, so that would lead me to believe that it's my favorite. Ugh, the scene in the kitchen when she drops the fork! Oh so very very scary.

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Tue, May 20, 2008 - 1:40 AMI've been a fan of "Asian horror" since the screening of 'Ringu' several years ago in a local arthouse cinema. Despite many other great Asian horror films since, nothing has quite captured that unpalpable feeling of dread to the same effect.
Ringu is my personal number 1, with honorable mentions going to...
- 'A Tale of Two Sisters' (what a beautiful yet seriously creepy film!!)
- 'Ju-On' (unnerving visuals and scarily odd sound effects)
Plenty more that I've enjoyed, and hopefully many more on the horizon.... I recently purchased a copy of 'Onibaba' and cannot wait to watch this movie again. I first saw it many years ago on BBC 2 - let's see if it lives up to my memories!
Great to read through this thread as it has already given some intriguing mentions to movies I've not yet managed to see.

Re: Favorite Asian Horror Movie
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 8:47 PMof course there are the greats like Ringu, Ju-on, The Grudge, One Missed Call, and The Eye
but my favorite asian horror movie would definetly be "Art of the Devil 2" it was a sequel to the 2004 cult classic art of the devil but, this sequel has little or nothing to do with the first one only the mere fact that people are dying by witchcraft.
In this sequel an attractive school teacher was cursed by many love spells but on by men, and this drove her to the brink of insanity. Two years later 5 of her students are there after the "suicide" of her husband. But a past full of deceit dwells between the students and the teacher and the teacher has put curses on the students.
P.S: there is a rumor of an american version of art of the devil for 2010 -
